Tenure-stream position in Sociology

The Department of Sociology at Ryerson University (www.ryerson.ca/sociology) invites applications for a tenure-stream position at the rank of Assistant Professor, subject to budgetary approval. We are seeking a colleague with a record of research that makes a strong contribution to the advancement of the study of Contemporary Social Theory generally, as well as to theoretical development in substantive fields. In addition, we are interested in applicants whose knowledge and background will complement and strengthen our core programme curriculum. Candidates should have expertise in contemporary theories and theoretical debates, and demonstrate a capacity for teaching both undergraduate students in Sociology and graduate students in one of the many interdisciplinary programmes in the Faculty of Arts. Our department is known for its diverse pedagogies and award-winning teaching. Our programme fosters critical thinking and has a strong focus on theoretical literacy and research skills. An ideal candidate will build on our teaching excellence, contribute to pedagogical exchange, provide collegial service, and enhance the intellectual life of the department.

The degree programme in Sociology offers a curriculum that requires a significant commitment to classical and contemporary Social Theory, with an emphasis on diversity, inequality and social justice, popular culture, media, and the contemporary urban experience. Our faculty work from a range of theoretical perspectives, and we are engaged in research that crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries. We welcome applicants who are likewise conversant with a variety of theoretical approaches and interpretive frameworks.

The position will commence on August 1, 2013. Applicants must have a completed PhD in Sociology or related field prior to the commencement of this position, a record of effective teaching at the undergraduate level, and a publication record of note or promise, with a clear and creative research plan.
