Diversity in Canadian Parenting and Families

Themed Section of Canadian Review of Sociology

Diversity in Canadian Parenting and Families

Research in the sociology of family has often focused on the Standard North American Family, often ignoring the diversity of experiences within families, the role of social structures in shaping family life, and differences in the impact of structure on families and individuals. At the same time, Canadian families are diverse, and becoming increasingly varied, in how they look and operate. Yet, scholarship focused on the complexity of family life in Canada is ill-defined and continues to evolve. This themed section of the Canadian Review of Sociology (CRS) will address questions about the diversity of family experiences, broadly defined, in Canada.

Papers may choose to focus on one or more of the following:

  • Unique aspects, particularly strengths, of BIPOC parents and families
  • Diversity in family structures and forms
  • Family life for LGBTQ+ adults and children
  • Diversity in parental roles and responsibilities
  • Diversity in family life across time and space
  • Canadian families in comparative perspective
  • How social policies, structures, and institutions have differential impacts on families, parents, and children

This list is not exhaustive and manuscripts that address the broader theme of diversity in Canadian family life will be given full consideration. Both qualitative and quantitative empirical pieces are encouraged. Manuscripts with applicability to social policy or with broad applicability to social problems are of particular interest.

Potential authors are encouraged to submit an extended abstract of no more than 500 words to the themed section guest editor, Kevin Shafer, at kshafer@byu.edu. Abstracts are due by September 15, 2021. Full manuscripts will be invited for submission based on evaluation of extended abstracts. Full papers will be due by December 31, 2021.
