Plusieurs groupes de recherche de la Société canadienne de sociologie décernent des prix pour le meilleur article étudiant dans le cadre de la conférence annuelle.

Les groupes de recherche peuvent sélectionner jusqu’à trois lauréats pour une année donnée, en fonction du niveau de l’étudiant (premier cycle, maîtrise ou doctorat). Tous les lauréats recevront un certificat et un tee-shirt « Commit Sociology » (jusqu’à épuisement des stocks). Animals in Society

The Animals in Society Research Cluster is pleased to announce the  Best Student Paper Award. This award is presented in recognition of excellent undergraduate or graduate scholarship in line with our Research Cluster’s aim and scope.  Graduate students may also be eligible for the Maybe Memorial Award.

Comparative and Historical Sociology

Each year, our Comparative and Historical Sociology Research Cluster awards the Best Student Paper. Any student who presents during our sessions are welcome to submit their paper as approved for their presentation. Their research must be a contribution to the field of historical and comparative sociology. The adjudicators will evaluate criteria such as a pertinent theoretical framework and consistent literature review, the writing style and the creativity of the authors.  One award only. If co-winners (2 different papers or co-authorship), they share the award.

Economic Sociology

The Economic Sociology Research Cluster will be awarding a Best Graduate Student Paper award for the 2023 CSA Conference.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • A member of the Canadian Sociological Association
  • The author must be a registered student (MA or Ph.D. student) when the paper is presented

Authorship of Nominated Paper:

  • An author may submit only one paper for consideration
  • Papers co-written with faculty are not eligible
  • Papers co-written with other students only are eligible
  • An author cannot have received the award in the previous three years

Conference Presentation of Nominated Paper:

  • The paper must be approved for presentation (and subsequently presented) at the Canadian Sociological Association Annual Conference in one of the Economic Sociology RC Sessions

Feminist Sociology

The Feminist Sociology Research Cluster is now accepting submissions for our Best Student Paper Award. The Award is conferred annually to recognize the excellence in a paper presented at the CSA Conference, whose primary author is a student. The purpose of this award is to promote high-quality research in the area of Feminist Sociology among emerging scholars.

The nominated paper must address themes broadly related to the subject areas of Feminist Sociology, and it may be empirical and/or theoretical in focus. One or more recipients will be selected from among papers submitted.

Internet, Technology, and Digital Sociology

The Internet, Technology, and Digital Sociology Research Cluster supports all research associated with the social implications of technology, broadly defined. Some topics of interest to cluster members include: digital access and inequality, digitally-mediated communication, how technology influences networks and relationships (e.g., professional, friendship, romantic), cyberbullying and cybercrime, the role of technology in teaching and education, online self-expression (e.g., identity, performativity), methodological considerations and the affordances of online data (including big data), and many others that focus on online spaces or the impacts of technological interventions in face-to-face environments.

The ITDS cluster invites papers, broadly in the areas identified above, for its second annual Student Paper Award Competition. There will be one winner, who will receive from the CSA a prize of $100, a certificate of achievement, and a ‘Commit Sociology’ T-shirt (available while supplies last). In addition, up to two honourable mentions will receive a certificate and T-shirt. The deadline to nominate a paper (self-nominations are welcome) is April 15, 2023. Results will be communicated by the ITDS paper adjudication committee by May 5, 2023.

Submission guidelines are as follows:

Eligibility:

  • Canadian Sociological Association membership in good standing is mandatory
  • Presentation in a Canadian Sociological Association Conference hosted session is mandatory
  • Currently enrolled graduate students (PhD or MA) will be eligible for the award. Papers are expected to be sole-authored, or co-authored only with other currently enrolled graduate students
  • The ITDS, in line with the CSA, invites and encourages the nomination (including self-nomination) of members from marginalized groups, including Indigenous peoples, racialized persons, persons with disabilities, persons who identify as women and/or LGBTQ2IA+, and all candidates who would contribute to the diversity of the Association

Requirements:

  • The paper must be submitted through the annual Conference Call for Papers process as a condition for consideration, preferably to the ITDS research cluster. The paper must be approved for presentation (and subsequently presented) at the Canadian Sociological Association Annual Conference
  • Papers submitted for consideration for the ITDS paper award must not be submitted to paper awards associated with other CSA research clusters
  • Only one paper is permitted to be submitted for consideration to this paper competition
  • Submitted papers should either be unpublished works or not accepted for publication

Political Sociology and Social Movements

The Political Sociology and Social Movements (PSSM) Research Cluster is now accepting submissions for the Best Student Award, to be presented to the graduate student (MA or PhD) whose paper is judged by the research cluster’s Awards Committee to be of the highest quality.  The paper must address a theme or themes broadly related to the subject areas of political sociology and social movements, and may be empirical and/or theoretical in focus.  The paper need not be presented at the Annual Canadian Sociological Association (CSA) Conference to be considered.

The award recipient will receive a certificate, as well as a “Commit Sociology” t-shirt, and will be recognized at the PSSM’s annual business meeting to be held at the upcoming CSA Conference.  If the paper is not being presented at the Conference, the $100 is not applicable.

Social Policy and Social Equality

The Social Policy and Social Equality Research Cluster is now accepting submissions for our Best Student Paper Award. The Award is conferred annually to recognize the excellence in a paper presented at the CSA Conference, whose primary author is a student.

The purpose of this award is to promote high-quality research in the areas of Social Policy and Social Equality among emerging scholars.

The nominated paper must address themes broadly related to the subject areas of Social Policy and Social Equality, and it may be empirical and/or theoretical in focus. One recipient will be selected from among all papers submitted.

Eligibility Criteria:

Primary Author of Nominated Paper should meet the three following eligibility criteria at the time of submission:

  • A member of the Canadian Sociological Association.
  • A member of Social Policy and Social Equality Research Cluster or the author of an abstract accepted in a session affiliated with the Cluster at the 2023 Annual Conference. Note that Cluster membership is free and can be requested here.
  • A Student at any level (undergraduate, MA, or PhD).

Authorship of Nominated Paper:

  • Sole author OR first author of a co-authored paper (including with faculty members). In cases of papers with co-authors, a note specifying the contribution of each author should be added in the acknowledgement section.

Sociology of Health

The CSA Sociology of Health Research Cluster Student Paper Award recognizes outstanding work by junior researchers. To be considered, the paper must focus on health, illness, or health policy. Papers can be empirical or theoretical.  The Health RC will offer 1 award from the nominated papers.

Primary Author of Nominated Paper should be currently:

  • A member of the Canadian Sociological Association
  • Primary author can be a master’s or doctoral student

The Sociology of Knowledge Cluster is now accepting submissions for our Best Student Paper Award! The paper must address themes broadly related to the sociology of knowledge, and may be empirical and/or theoretical in focus. One recipient will be selected from among all papers submitted.

Eligibility Criteria

Authorship

The primary author of the nominated paper must be a) a Canadian Sociological Association membership in good standing, and b) an undergraduate, MA, or PhD student.

The nominated paper may be sole authored or co-authored. Papers co-authored with faculty members are eligible, but to ensure an emphasis on students’ work, nominees will be required to provide an explanation of what each author contributed to the paper.

Conference presentation

The nominated paper must be presented in a session hosted by the Canadian Sociological Association Conference. Presentations in sessions affiliated with the Sociology of Knowledge cluster are encouraged but not required.

Publication status

The nominated paper must be unpublished. 

Paper format

The nominated paper must be written in English and must be no longer than 10,000 words or 40 pages,

Papers may be theoretical or empirical. One recipient will be selected among all papers submitted.

Sociology of Migration

The Cluster on the Sociology of Migration is pleased to announce the continuation of an award for the best student paper on the topic of the sociology of migration that is presented at the annual meeting. This award acknowledges the contributions made by the awardee’s paper in advancing the knowledge and understanding of topics in the field of migration. Please see the web site for our mission statement and for examples of topics that fall within the Sociology of Migration field.

Only one award will be made for each year. Depending on the number and quality of submissions, the Sociology of Migration cluster adjudication committee reserves the right not to make a best student paper award in any given year.

Criteria for Submissions

Who is eligible?

The nominated paper may be written by one or more students (undergraduate, M.A. or Ph.D). Papers co-authored with faculty, with a workplace supervisor or with a colleague who has already received a Ph.D. will not be considered for the award.

The primary or sole author must be a member in good standing of the Canadian Sociology Association.  The primary or sole author also must be a registered student at the time of the paper submission.

CSA Conference Presentation of the Nominated Paper

The author(s) must present the submitted paper at a session of the annual CSA Conference in the year of the award. The author order for the nominated paper must be the same as the author order listed in the conference program.   The session can be affiliated with the Cluster on the Sociology of Migration (SOM) or with another session not affiliated with the SOM cluster.

Nominated Paper Status

The paper should be an unpublished paper not yet approved for publication.

Papers that are published are not eligible for the award.  Papers already posted in the on-line pre-print section of a journal, book or report are not eligible for the award.

Nominated Paper Format

The maximum length of the nominated paper should be under 10,000 words or under 41 pages, including abstract, text, bibliographies, charts or tables, and appendices. The minimum length of a paper should be 15 pages, or 3,750 words.   The paper should be submitted in English and it should use New Roman 12 type. The text should be double spaced.

Nominated Paper Deadline

The deadline for the submission of the nominated paper is March 31, 2023.  The adjudication results will be available in May and the recipient(s) of the award will be announced at the SOM Cluster business meeting at the annual CSA Conference and posted on the SOM website.

Adjudication of the submissions

The SOM cluster will strike an adjudication committee each year to review submissions for the best student paper award.

Number of Awards

Nominated papers for the SOM award may be entered for awards from other clusters or for the CSA best student paper award.

The SOM best student paper award will not be given to the same recipient for two successive years.

Submission instructions

The SOM cluster will accept self-nominations. It also will accept submissions by nominators external to the paper and authors, provided nominators have received permission by the authors to nominate.  All submissions must be made by March 31, 2023.

Submitting the paper consists of two steps.

  1. First, complete the form (download the SOM Award Information Form) which provides information about the nominator, the authorship and the presentation session.
  2. Second, email this completed form in Word with the attached nominated paper in PDF format to som@csa-scs.ca.  The last day for submitting both the form and the paper is March 31, 2023.

You will receive acknowledgement of its receipt; if you do not receive acknowledgement, please contact Lisa Kaida (kaidar@mcmaster.ca) within 5 days of sending in the material.

Urban Sociology

The Urban Sociology research cluster is now accepting submissions for our Best Student Paper Award. The paper should be sociological work that seeks to understand human interactions and institutions in urban areas. This includes research on topics that explore the various interrelated dimensions of cultural, economic and social life in cities that embrace empirical, theoretical, or methodological perspectives. One recipient will be selected from among all papers submitted.

Authorship of Nominated Paper

  • Sole authored, co‐authored with other students, or co‐authored with a faculty member
    o Include a statement regarding the extent of the faculty member’s contribution. (The faculty co‐author must not contribute more than 25% towards the completion of the paper).

Conference Presentation of Nominated Paper

  •  Presentation in a Canadian Sociological Association Conference hosted session is mandatory
  •  Paper must be presented in a session affiliated with the Work, Professions, and Occupations Research Cluster

Nominated Paper Status

  • Unpublished and not yet approved for publication Nominated Paper Format
  • Maximum 10,000 words or 40 pages

We will accept submissions until April 25, 2023.

Please e‐mail a copy of the paper (in PDF format), along with the information below, to Vivian Shalla (vshalla@uoguelph.ca):

  •  Primary author’s name, e‐mail address, affiliation (academic institution), and student level (MA, PhD)
  •  Co‐author name(s), affiliation(s), and student level(s) (if applicable)
  •  Statement pertaining to the extent of the faculty co‐author’s contribution (if applicable)
  •  Abstract that is included in the Canadian Sociological Association Conference program
  •  Canadian Sociological Association Conference session in which the paper is being presented
  •  Authors are welcome to self‐identify as members of equity deserving communities

Award Recipient:

The award recipient will be sent a certificate of achievement and a $100 prize. The recipient will be identified in the Conference program, on the Canadian Sociological Association Conference website, and on the Work, Professions, and Occupations Research Cluster website.
