2017 Post-Congress Update

Our Experience at CSA 2017

The Sociology of Development Research Cluster of the CSA met on June 1, 2017 at the CSA Annual Meetings held at Ryerson University in Toronto. We are pleased to report that this year we offered more sessions compared to CSA 2016. Thanks to the excellent work of our conference committee members – Miriam Hird-Younger, Greg Hooks, and Hasan Mahmud, we had two skills-oriented roundtable sessions, one thematic roundtable on community development and gender, and one panel on conflict and precarious labour. Our sessions included Canadian-based as well as international presenters from the US, Singapore, Qatar, and Bangladesh. The sessions were well attended and attracted even some undergraduate sociology students to the audience. Following our cluster meeting, a group of RC members and some students gathered for dinner at the fourth annual Sociology of Development RC social.

Summary of RC Meeting

During our RC meeting, we discussed the role of our cluster during the ISA 2018 World Congress of Sociology which will take place in Toronto (Call for Abstracts: http://www.isa-sociology.org/en/conferences/world-congress/toronto-2018/call-for-abstracts/).  The CSA will not be participating in the 2018 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences in Regina, because it has signed a contract to fully support the ISA 2018 Congress. The CSA would like to see the clusters support CSA’s efforts in working with ISA to help build international networks and collaborations.

What is our cluster’s role at ISA 2018?

ISA 2018 is an exciting opportunity to share knowledge and meet new colleagues at the international level. We need to ensure our cluster’s representation at ISA 2018 by submitting as many abstracts /posters as possible as well as attending scholarly and social events. To this end, we encourage those working in the field of development to submit a proposal to any of the sessions under “RC09 Social Transformations and Sociology of Development” found here: https://isaconf.confex.com/isaconf/wc2018/webprogrampreliminary/Symposium446.html

Our colleague Samuel Cohn is the organizer of the session called Next Generation of Work in Development Sociology” which is quite open to any theoretical and methodological approach.

2018 Cluster meeting and Volunteers for Cluster Duties

CSA will not be scheduling official RC meetings, however, we thought that we could still hold an informal cluster meeting in order to appoint volunteers for cluster committees and other duties for our regular CSA conference in 2019. Those unable to attend the meeting, can volunteer for the positions by email. For 2017-2018 Jasmin Hristov (jasminmanaus@gmail.com) remains the coordinator of the cluster.

If you would like to share any information / news that might be of interest to sociologists working in the field of development, please email our list-serve at: candevsoc@mun.ca.

Congratulations to all presenters on their excellent work and thanks to all participants and our conference committee members. We wish you all an enjoyable summer and look forward to your participation in the cluster over the next academic year. Hope to see you at ISA 2018.
