2022 Best Student Paper Award – Submit by April 15

The Political Sociology and Social Movements (PSSM) Research Cluster is now accepting submissions for the Best Student Award, to be presented to the graduate student (MA or PhD) whose paper is judged by the research cluster’s Awards Committee to be of the highest quality.  The paper must address a theme or themes broadly related to the subject areas of political sociology and social movements, and may be empirical and/or theoretical in focus.  The paper need not be presented at the Annual Canadian Sociological Association (CSA) Conference to be considered. We will accept submission by nominators or by self-nomination until April 15, 2022.

The award recipient will receive a certificate, as well as a “Commit Sociology” t-shirt, and will be recognized at the PSSM’s annual business meeting to be held virtually at the upcoming CSA Conference (May 16 to 20, 2022).

Eligibility Criteria:

Primary Author of Nominated Paper

  • Canadian Sociological Association membership in good standing
  • MA or PhD student

Authorship of Nominated Paper 

  • Sole authored or co-authored with another student (MA or PhD)

Nominated Paper Status 

  • Unpublished and not yet approved for publication
  • One submission per author

Nominated Paper Length and Language 

  • Maximum 10,000 words or 40 pages, including bibliography and appendices
  • Submission will be accepted in English or French

Email a copy of the paper (in PDF) format along with the following information, to Emily Laxer (emily.laxer@glendon.yorku.ca) or Lisa Kowalchuk (lkowalch@uoguelph.ca), by April 15, 2022.

  • Primary author name, email address, affiliation (academic institution), and student level (MA, PhD)
  • Co-author name(s), affiliation(s), and student level(s)
  • The author(s) are welcome to self-identify as a member of an equity deserving community
