Remembering Dr. Lance Roberts September 3 1950-September 14 2019

It is with heavy hearts that the Department of Sociology and Criminology reports the untimely death of Dr. Lance Roberts. He passed away in Winnipeg on September 14 2019 with his family at his side.

Lance was a well-liked and well known professor of sociology at the University of Manitoba and a senior fellow at St John’s College. He touched the lives of many students, faculty and staff. Students remember him as a challenging but engaging professor who could liven any class with anecdotes involving current events, personal experience and even the odd soufflé recipe. Faculty and staff fondly remember his hearty laugh that seemed to permeate the hallways of the department. More importantly, he was a mentor and friend to many. He will be greatly missed.

Lance’s teaching career spanned over 40 years and his dedication to the University of Manitoba is exemplary. In recognition of his teaching and research excellence, Lance won several awards at the University including: The University 1 Excellence in Teaching Award, the Dr and Mrs H.H. Saunderson Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Faculty of Arts Teaching Excellence Award, and the Faculty of Arts Professor of the Year Award.

He was predeceased by Laverne, his wife of almost 40 years, who herself passed away just one year earlier.
