The phrase "Publish or Perish" is heard more and more often in academia and can often stir emotions that make students want to perish. Navigating the publishing space can be daunting, but it doesn't need to be. This panel discussion will address Frequently Asked Questions that students have about publishing their research work. Discussion topics will include publishing qualitative vs. quantitative research; choosing the best source for publication; things to consider when thinking about open source publications; how to turn a dissertation into a book; etc.

Dr. Alex Bierman, University of Calgary
Alex Bierman is Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Calgary. His research examines how social inequality conditions both exposure to stress and the consequences of stress as individuals age. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers and co-edited the Handbook of Sociology of Mental Health, which has been accessed online over three-quarters of a million times. Dr. Bierman also recently co-edited the ASA journal, Society and Mental Health.
Dr. Lisa-Jo van den Scott, Memorial University
Lisa-Jo K. van den Scott is a Professor of Sociology at Memorial University. Her most recent book, "Walled-In: Arctic Housing and a Sociology of Walls," connects to her research interests in space/place, time, qualitative methods, architecture, and science and technology studies. She has served as an associate editor for the Journal of Empirical Research on Human Research Ethics and is currently the editor-in-chief of the journal Symbolic Interaction.
