2. Award Adjudication:
As a result of the recent restructuring of CSA award nomination and adjudication processes, each Subcommittee member adjudicated different awards: Early Investigator Award (Frank), Best Student Paper (Willmott), and Angus Reid Applied Sociology (Maghbouleh), and Global Sociology (Kaida).
3. Continuation of the COVID-19 Hub:
With the assistance of Sherry Fox, the Research Advisory Subcommittee created the COVID-19 Hub – an online space to share and promote sociological research and resources related to the COVID-19 pandemic – within the CSA website in 2020 and continued to manage the portal. As of April 2022, 34 research profiles have been posted on the “Spotlight on Sociologists’ Research” section.

1. Conference
This year, the Research Advisory Subcommittee organized three panel sessions for the 2021 CSA conference. Two of these panels were carried over from the previous conference that was cancelled in 2020 and the third is a session focused on sociological research on COVID-19:
Session 1: Resisting Racism and Colonialism in Sociology
Session 2: Digital Data Management and Open Access: Implications for Research and Publishing
Session 3: Sociological Research and the COVID-19 Pandemic: Insights on the Unequal Impacts of COVID-19
2. Early Investigator Award
Each year, the subcommittee is responsible for reviewing applications for the Early Investigator Award. This year there were ten nominees. Due to conflicts of interest, subcommittee members Kristyn Frank and Lisa Kaida recused themselves from the review of applications and were replaced by Pamela Sugiman (Ryerson University) and Md Saidul Islam (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore). The review committee was chaired by subcommittee member Kyle Willmott.
3. Creation of the COVID-19 Hub
With the assistance of Sherry Fox, the subcommittee created an online space to share and promote sociological research and resources related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The “COVID-19 Hub” was promoted among CSA members who were asked to fill out an online form if they were interested in sharing their work via the CSA website. We had a positive
response and, as of May 2021, profiles of 25 researchers have been posted. The majority of these profiles highlighted the work of sociologists working at Canadian institutions,
however, some sociologists outside of Canada also participated. Resources such as COVID-19 data sources, calls for papers, research articles and commentaries as well as an “In the News” section are also part of the COVID-19 Hub.
4. Subcommittee Membership
This year, the Executive Committee approved the expansion of the Research Advisory Subcommittee from 3 members to 4 members going forward. This decision was based on the fact that other committees have between 4 to 6 members, and the Research Advisory Subcommittee has additional duties related to the adjudication of the Early Investigator Award, conference panel planning and the COVID-19 Hub. Additionally, there is no cost associated with the expansion.
