Dr. Walter S. DeKeseredy will present on his book Skating on Thin Ice: Professional Hockey, Rape Culture, & Violence Against Women co-authored with Dr. Stu Cowan and Dr. Martin D. Schwartz.

The book exposes the culture of toxic masculinity in professional hockey and suggests how sport and society can change the narrative on sexual assault and violence.

Natalia is a PhD candidate in Sociology at the University of Toronto whose areas of specialization are critical and feminist criminology, narrative methods, and the sociology of punishment, gender, and urban marginality.

Guest Speaker: Dr. Walter S. DeKeseredy, West Virginia University

Walter is the Anna Deane Carlson Endowed Chair of Social Sciences, director of the Research Center on Violence, and a professor of sociology at West Virginia University. He has published 27 books, over 130 scientific journal articles, and close to 100 scholarly book chapters on violence against women and other social problems. He has earned numerous prestigious awards throughout his career, including the American Society of Criminology’s 2022 Praxis Award as well as their 2022 Robert Jerin Book of the Year Award. He was named a fellow of the American Society of Criminology in 2022.
