About Us
The Association was first established in 1965 as the Canadian Sociology and Anthropology Association (CSAA) / Société canadienne de sociologie et anthropologie (SCSA) and registered as a federal not-for-profit corporation in 1972. The CSAA/SCSA was re-structured as the Canadian Sociological Association (CSA) / Société canadienne de sociologie (SCS) in 2007. The CSA is a member of the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences as well as the International Sociological Association.
The Association's objective is to advance the discipline of sociology in Canada and internationally by fostering opportunities for sociological research, teaching, and learning in accordance with the highest ethical and academic standards. It also seeks to enhance public understanding, interest, and critical awareness of social structures, with particular attention to Canadian society within a global context.
As part of the CSA’s objective, resources for knowledge sharing and professional development are accessible to the community through its website. Members benefit from a complimentary subscription to the journal, Canadian Review of Sociology, as well as being eligible for; participation in the annual Conference, award nominations, funding programs, governance roles, and voting in the Annual General Meeting.
The CSA membership includes academics as well as community engaged researchers and practitioners. Anyone with an interest in the discipline of Sociology is welcome to join.
The business of the CSA is managed by an employed full-time Executive Director under the direction of the Executive Committee as elected into their roles by members of the Association.
