Global Sociology Book Award
Nomination Deadline: January 16, 2026
Revisions to the terms and eligibility criteria are pending and will be posted in late September.
English publications are eligible in 2026 but French publications will be eligible in 2027.
Objectives
The Canadian Sociological Association's Black Caucus proposed this award to celebrate scholars conducting research outside of the Canadian context. The objectives of the Canadian Sociological Association (CSA) Global Sociology Book Prize include;
- Recognition of outstanding rigorous empirical and theoretical research conducted in other countries by Canadian-based scholars
- Improve the visibility of the CSA as an international association of sociologists
- Demonstrate that the CSA’s professional focus, while fundamentally Canadian, transcends state boundaries
- Encourage Canadian-based scholars to engage in transnational research and partnerships
- Showcase the depth and breadth of Canadian sociological scholarship
Eligibility Criteria
Nominators:
- Self nominations are accepted
- Colleagues
- Publishers
Author(s):
- Co-authored books are welcome
- Has a PhD in Sociology AND/OR
- Holds a position in a Canadian academic institution’s Department of Sociology (or related Department) and whose work focuses on teaching, research, or theory in Sociology
- Membership in the Canadian Sociological Association is not required at the time of nomination.
Book:
- Published between January 1, 2024 and January 1, 2026
- English publications will be eligible for the 2026 award
- French publications will be eligible in 2027
- First edition publication
- There is no restriction on the geographic focus of eligible books
- The award is guided by the following criteria for the nominated book;
- Original and deemed to have a major impact on the discipline of sociology beyond Canada
- Theoretical and methodological approach must be sociological in orientation
- Based on rigorous empirical research
- Written with both lay and academic audiences in mind
- Books in the following categories are ineligible;
- Edited collections
- Translations
- Designed for instructional purposes
Submitting Nominations
An online form has been created to facilitate the nomination submission process. The information submitted in this form will be used by the Chair of the Global Sociology Award Committee to verify the nomination's eligibility. If eligible, you will be provided with the information required to send copies of the book to each of the committee members for adjudication.
