We are convening a panel at the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S) conference in Toronto 2026 and warmly invite contributions.
Panel 17: Voices, Power, and Policy: Rethinking Patient and Public Engagement and Involvement
This panel invites contributions examining PPIE and participatory approaches in health policy, including tensions between “lay” and “expert” knowledge and innovative or collaborative methods that foreground marginalised voices and contest entrenched hierarchies. Contributions may explore themes including (but not limited to):

Participatory or co-produced research in health policy

Power dynamics between expert and experiential knowledge

Inclusion, exclusion, and representation in PPIE

Digital participation and emerging forms of engagement

Strategies for amplifying marginalised voices in policy processes
