The Department of Resource Economics and Environmental Sociology has a history of producing high quality research on relevant topics pertaining to agricultural, resource and environmental economics. The Department includes a group of highly reputable scholars and a vibrant graduate studies program with approximately 60 graduate students. Department members are engaged in several undergraduate programs in the Faculty including a BA in environmental studies and BSc in environmental and conservation science. The department offers master and doctoral degrees in rural and environmental sociology, an interdisciplinary degree in risk and community resilience, along with degrees provided by economists within the department. The successful candidate will contribute to these undergraduate and graduate programs and build new areas of expertise both individually and as part of collaborative teams composed of people within and outside academia.

The City of Edmonton is a vibrant multicultural center with over one million people that offers the benefits of an urban lifestyle combined with high-quality schools, varied restaurants, excellent professional theatre and music venues, excellent public transportation and ample opportunities for recreation. Edmonton's River Valley is the largest urban park in Canada (22 times the size of Central Park in New York City), with more than 160 kilometers of maintained pathways and 20 major parks. It is the capital of Alberta, with the lowest provincial tax regime in the country. Edmonton is known as Canada's Festival City, with more than thirty major annual festivals celebrating its rich cultural diversity and community spirit. It has all the attractions of a big city, yet it is clean, safe, and livable, with excellent schools and health care. Edmonton is located only a few hours drive from Banff and Jasper National Parks, which offer skiing in winter and excellent hiking and sightseeing in summer.

The Department of Resource Economics and Environmental Sociology, Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in Environmental Sociology. The successful candidate will have strong theoretical foundations in sociology with a research program that is focused on topics in environmental, agricultural or natural resource sociology. We will consider applications from candidates working in any subject area within these fields, but are particularly interested in receiving applications from individuals who are skilled methodologists (the ability to teach quantitative methods would be an asset), conduct research focused on consumption and consumerism, and/or have an international focus. A research program with links to sustainable development goals, Indigenous communities, and collaboration on interdisciplinary teams are also valued assets of a successful applicant. We also seek candidates who will support and advance university commitments to equity, diversity and inclusivity.

Candidates must hold a PhD in sociology, environmental sociology, or a closely related field. We also welcome applicants with non-traditional pathways to an academic career in Canada. Candidates must have already completed their PhD, or expect to receive their PhD by July 1, 2025. Experience working with topics in environmental, agricultural or natural resource sociology is required. An ability to teach quantitative methods and experience with a research program with links to sustainable development goals and Indigenous communities is an asset. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a strong research program with external funding, engage in interdisciplinary research collaborations, and train and supervise graduate students. The position involves teaching at the graduate and undergraduate level. We also assume the successful candidate will contribute to the intellectual life of the university, the sociology profession, and to communities and groups who partner in research.
