Call for Abstracts
The 57th Annual Conference of the Canadian Sociological Association (CSA) will be held in two sections.
1. Virtual sessions scheduled from Monday, June 3 through Friday, June 7, 2024.
2. In-person sessions scheduled from Monday, June 17 through Friday, June 21, 2024 as part of the Federation of Humanities and Social Sciences Congress in partnership with McGill University.
CSA Conference delegates benefit from the opportunity to learn from, and engage with, scholars and practitioners working within the discipline of sociology. We are hoping that this new Conference format will improve accessibility for our members and the wider community.
The Call for Abstracts closed on January 29, 2024.
The results of the abstract review process will be released on February 16 at 2:00pm ET.

Call for Abstracts: December 6, 2023 – January 29, 2024
Those wishing to present their research at the Conference may submit an abstract of their paper or presentation to one of the sessions that have been approved for the Conference program. Some sessions are also inviting panelist participation.
The list of sessions open to abstract submissions (or panelist participation) will be available beginning December 6, 2023. Abstracts must be submitted to a specific session through our online abstract submission system.

Challenging Hate: Sustaining shared futures
While alarming images of a warming planet infuse the concept with a critical sense of urgency, ‘sustainability’ transcends even the immense challenges posed by climate change, urging recognition of the interconnectedness of human existence and global action on the overlapping social, economic, environmental, and technological issues that threaten our future.
As members of the global community, we share the responsibility to take on this multi-faceted challenge of a lifetime by way of concerted action across disciplines, bringing into focus its unequal impact, the bounds of our planet, and in turn, our solutions.
For this 2024 edition, enmeshing the knowledges of diverse contexts, and amplifying Black and Indigenous perspectives, Congress invites scholars, students, policymakers and community members to reflect on what remains collectively attainable – and what must be done – in the face of this vast and complex imperative in order to bring forth solutions for today, and sustain systems of tomorrow.
The Canadian Sociological Association (CSA) is particularly interested in the mobilization, trajectories, and social implications of social movements, countermovements and solidarities in relation to Islamophobia, Antisemitism, and intersecting racism(s), gender fluidity and rising anti-2SLGBTQ+ coalitions, the school curriculum, vaccination requirements and the coalescence of seemingly ideologically disparate groups (e.g. the far-right and religious groups).
- Conference Participation Policy
Membership in the Canadian Sociological Association (CSA) is not required when submitting an abstract.
If the abstract is approved for presentation in the CSA Conference then CSA membership and Conference registration will be required by April 15, 2024.
Note:
● Paper co-authors neither presenting nor attending the CSA Conference are exempt from these registration requirements.

- Abstracts and Presentations
Abstracts
An abstract is a summary of your research and the paper you plan to present at the Conference. For the CSA Conference, we are requesting that abstracts be between 500 and 700 words (up to 1,400 words if both English and French versions are included) to give the session organizers a greater understanding of your work.
Abstracts should include the following elements;
1. an overall description of the topic explored
2. the theoretical, historical, or methodological framework used
3. an outline of the main argument(s)
4. a brief summary of the conclusion(s)
5. relevance to the theme of the session the abstract is being submitted to and/or CSA Conference (optional)Refer to past Conference Programs for abstract examples.
The CSA Conference utilizes an online abstract submission system. Abstracts are submitted to a specific session open to the Call for Abstracts. You may submit a maximum of two (2) different abstracts to two (2) different sessions.
The sessions will indicate if the organizers will be considering in-person presentations, virtual presentations, or both presentation formats.
Ensure that the session is accepting virtual presentation submissions (i.e. not an in-person only session) if you are only able to participate in the Conference’s virtual section from June 3-7, 2024. Please note that space in the virtual Conference section is limited and the CSA cannot guarantee that all requests for virtual presentations can be accommodated.
The Conference Program Committee reserves the right to re-assign your abstract to a different session for consideration based on feedback from the session organizers.
If your abstract is declined, it may then be considered for another session or omnibus session upon the author’s or session organizer’s request.
Approved abstracts and presenter details will be posted on the CSA Conference website as well as the archived Conference Program (pdf version).
Presentations
Applicable to approved abstracts.
All Conference Paper Presentation Sessions are 90-minutes in length and must include at least 15 minutes at the end for audience engagement. The session organizer will contact participants to confirm the length of their presentation. The time will range from 12- 20 minutes depending on the number of presentations in the session.
In-person participants typically present orally with slides (using a projector and screen as well as a computer set up in the room) or handouts to illustrate their findings.
Virtual participants will be utilizing Zoom to share their screen and slides while presenting orally.
Presenations may also take a more creative approach such as a film showing or performance art.
A participant may be the sole or primary presenter in up to two (2) different paper presentation sessions. The participant may participate in a third session as a panelist. Assuming the role of session chair, discussant, or co-presenter does not count in this three (3) session limit.
The CSA must be notified immediately by the author if there are changes to a presentation title or abstract and or if the presentation has been withdrawn from the session to ensure accuracy of the Conference Program.
Session organizers may request a copy of your paper and/or presentation prior to the Conference for an opportunity to review and provide feedback. This material will be sent directly to the session organizers and may be distributed amongst the presenters in the session.
The CSA recognizes that there may be situations in which there are pedagogical and professional benefits to presenting the same research at multiple associations at Congress. The Association encourages its members, as a matter of good practice, to inform both associations of their plans to present the research in multiple association conferences.
Failure to maintain communication with, or provide information requested by, the session organizer or the CSA may result in the removal of the presentation from the Conference program.
Full papers will not be posted on the CSA Conference website nor within the Conference Program. Virtual sessions and presentations will be recorded if all participants approve and may then be posted on the CSA YouTube Channel.
- Abstract Submission Guidelines
Abstracts must be submitted online between December 6, 2023 and January 29, 2024 (11:59 PM – PST).
A maximum of two (2) different abstracts may be submitted to two (2) different sessions. This applies to the primary author and presenter. A person may be listed as a co-author (who is not presenting) on additional abstracts.
An abstract submitted by a session organizer to his or her own session must be reviewed by a co-organizer, a session organizer within the Research Cluster, or the Conference Program Committee.
Abstracts may be in English and/or French but the session organizer may request a translation for review purposes.
Abstracts must be between 500 and 700 words (or up to 1400 words if both English and French versions are submitted simultaneously).
Do not use all capital letters in the title or the abstract.
Include all co-author information in the applicable online submission form fields and indicate which co-author is expected to present at the Conference.
The CSA must be notified immediately if there are changes to the abstract or if it has been withdrawn by the author.

The CSA will be sending notification of your abstract’s approval or rejection on February 16, 2024 by email. The review results and session organizer feedback will also be posted on the Abstract Submission System that day.
