Candidate Nominations

The objective of the Canadian Sociological Association (CSA) is to promote the advancement of the discipline of Sociology in Canada and abroad and to expand the opportunities for sociological research, teaching, and learning in compliance with the highest ethical and academic standards. It seeks to increase public knowledge, interest and critical awareness of social structures, particularly in Canadian society, within a global system.

Our Association is governed by a team of dedicated individuals who have been elected to serve on our Subcommittees and Executive Committee. We have been fortunate to have a history of strong leadership that has helped the Association grow in membership, programs, resources, and support of the discipline. Now more than ever, can we appreciate the important responsibility elected officials have in ensuring the stability of our Association.

Members of the CSA are eligible to hold a position on the Executive Committee or Subcommittees. The contribution of time and expertise from volunteers assuming these leadership roles is key to the success of the CSA.

Any one (1) member of the Canadian Sociological Association in good standing may nominate another member of the Canadian Sociological Association in good standing for a vacant position on a Subcommittee or the Executive Committee by submitting the following information to the CSA Office no later than March 15, 2024.

  • Position for nomination
    • The list of positions are below and note that student members (Undergraduate, MA, or PhD) are only eligible for the Student Concerns Subcommittee positions
  • First and last name, academic affiliation, and email address of person being nominated
    • The person must be a member of the Canadian Sociological Association
  • First and last name, academic affiliation, and email address for each person submitting this nomination
    • A minimum of one (1) nominator who is not the nominee is required
    • Each nominator must be a member of the Canadian Sociological Association

The nominator(s) as well as the nominee must be copied on the email when submitting the nomination.

 1. President Elect

Member nominations for this position are subject to approval by the Executive Committee.

This position supports the President as required and will assume the position if the President is unable to continue in the role. Those assuming this position will serve one year as President Elect, one year as President, and a final year as Past President. The duties for the first year include;

  • Member of the Executive Committee
  • Co-chair of the Awards Committee
  • Member of the Administrative Committee
  • Member of the Conference Program Committee

2. Treasurer

Member nominations for this position are subject to approval by the Executive Committee.

The Treasurer is third in line of succession to the Presidency, behind the current President and the President Elect. The duties include;

  • Work with the Executive Director to monitor revenue and expenditures as well as prepare budget and financial reports
  • Negotiate employee contracts and conduct annual performance reviews
  • Oversee candidate election process
  • Member of the Administrative Committee
  • Ex-officio member of the Conference Program Committee

3. Decolonization Subcommittee Member(s)

The mandate of this subcommittee includes;

  • Bring current and emerging issues of concern dealing with reconciliation, decolonization and settler colonialism to the attention of the Association
  • Represent the Association on external committees dealing with reconciliation issues as relevant and with the approval of the Executive Committee
  • Incorporate reconciliation initiatives into the regular business of the Association and annual conferences
  • Assign members to other Association committees (e.g. Awards, Conference Program, Nominations, etc) if deemed appropriate
  • Knowledge sharing through virtual events, website resources, and Conference sessions

4. Equity Issues Subcommittee Member(s)

The mandate of this subcommittee includes;

  • Bring current and emerging issues of concern dealing with equity and injustice to the attention of the association and members
  • Represent the Association on external committees dealing with equity issues as relevant and with the approval of the Executive Committee
  • Incorporate equity initiatives into the regular business of the Association and annual conferences
  • Assign members to other Association committees (Awards, Conference Program, Nominations, etc) if deemed appropriate
  • Knowledge sharing through virtual events, website resources, and Conference sessions

5. Francophone Affairs Subcommittee Member(s)

The mandate of this subcommittee includes;

  • Bring current and emerging issues facing French-speaking faculty, students, graduates, and postdoctoral researchers to the attention of the association and members
  • Support the promotion and enhancement of sociological research conducted in French, as well as the activities of the CSA that take place in French
  • Represent the Association on external committees dealing with French-speaking sociologists, sociological studies in French, and sociological research conducted in French with the approval of the Executive Committee
  • Incorporate French-language activities into the regular business of the Association and annual conferences
  • Assign members to other Association committees (Awards, Conference Program, Nominations, etc) if deemed appropriate
  • Knowledge sharing through virtual events, website resources, and Conference sessions
  • Organize and oversee the promotion and awarding of the Prix d'excellence en sociologie de langue française

6. Policy, Ethics, and Professional Concerns Subcommittee Member(s)

The mandate of this subcommittee includes;

  • Convey issues regarding those working or studying within the discipline of Sociology
  • Advise on ethical issues and policy development within the Association
  • Assign members to other Association committees (Awards, Conference Program, Nominations, etc) if deemed appropriate
  • Knowledge sharing through virtual events, website resources, and Conference sessions

7. Research Advisory Subcommittee Member(s)

The mandate of this subcommittee includes;

  • Bring current and emerging issues of concern dealing with research and data to the attention of the association and members
  • Represent the Association on external committees dealing with research and data as relevant and with the approval of the Executive Committee
  • Incorporate research related initiatives into the regular business of the Association and annual conferences
  • Assign members to other Association committees (Awards, Conference Program, Nominations, etc) if deemed appropriate
  • Knowledge sharing through virtual events, website resources, and Conference sessions

8. Student Concerns Subcommittee Member(s)

This Subcommittee has members representing one of Canada’s regions: Western (BC, AB, SK, MB), Central (ON, QC), and Eastern (NB, NL, NS, PEI). Additional members include a communications director and cross-appointed representatives who hold dual positions liaising with other Subcommittees.

The mandate of the subcommittee includes;

  • Identify priorities with respect to issues affecting students
  • Advise on student funding programs and assist with adjudication
  • Stimulate and facilitate communication among students
  • Committee membership on Association initiatives supporting students
  • Membership on the Awards Committees
  • Knowledge sharing through virtual events, website resources, and Conference sessions

Positions required for 2024 - 2027:

  • Central Canada Rep (ON, QC)
  • Cross-appointed Student Concerns Subcommittee / Decolonization Subcommittee Rep
  • Cross-appointed Student Concerns Subcommittee / Equity Issues Subcommittee Rep
  • Cross-appointed Student Concerns Subcommittee / Francophone Affairs Subcommittee Rep

Cross-appointed Representative Responsibilities:

  • Attend virtual meetings of the Student Concerns as well the assigned Subcommittee
  • Liaise between the subcommittees to share information on projects and initiatives
  • Identify and lead opportunities for collaboration between the subcommittees that will benefit student members and uphold our commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization
