Lorne Tepperman Outstanding Contribution to Teaching

Mandate

The Canadian Sociological Association would like to recognize the work of members who have made outstanding contributions to the teaching of undergraduate sociology. The award will focus on contributions that have made a significant impact on the manner in which undergraduate sociology courses are taught within Canada and/or internationally.

The award recipient(s) will have produced at least one publication of exceptional merit or a body of work that has contributed significantly to undergraduate instruction within the discipline of sociology. The award is not designed to recognize outstanding teaching ability at one's own institution unless that is part of a career with broader impact.

Eligibility

We accept nominations in English and French.

Nominee Eligibility

The Committee will consider contributions made by individuals or group of people working together. Sociology (or related) programs and/or departments are not eligible.

  • Must be a member of the Canadian Sociological Association in good standing
  • Must hold a position in, or an affiliation with, a Canadian Sociology department (e.g. faculty, adjunct, emeritus)

If a group of people are being nominated, at least one person must be a member of the Canadian Sociological Association in good standing and hold a position in, or an affiliation with, a Canadian Sociology department (e.g. faculty, adjunct, emeritus).

Contribution Eligibility

All contributions must include the demonstrated use within academia and/or the community. The Committee defines the contribution to teaching for the purposes of this award adjudication as follows below.

Nominations may demonstrate use within one or more of these categories.

Contribution Category A - Instructional Material

The nominated work is intended to advance the undergraduate understanding of Sociology: material designed for undergraduate instructional purposes (teaching and curriculum-related)

Contribution Category B - Teaching Techniques

The Central participation in the scholarship of teaching and learning, development and communication of innovative teaching techniques for undergraduates

Submitting Nominations

Download the nomination instructions and submit the requested information by email to the CSA office (office@csa-scs.ca) by March 15, 2024.

Honouring Award Recipients

The award recipient will receive a plaque and be recognized through the Canadian Sociological Association communications and website.

The recipient(s) may select one fourth-year undergraduate student to receive a complimentary membership in the Canadian Sociological Association as well as complimentary Congress delegate registration.

The student must be enrolled in a Sociology program within a Canadian academic institution. The complimentary Association membership will be for a term of one year and Congress delegate registration may be used for the event scheduled in the year of the award or the following year.
