Meet the Author - Juggling rhythms: Working-student life in the 21st century
Meet the author webinar: March 30, 2026
11:00am PT / 12:00 MT / 2:00pm ET / 3:00pm AT / 3:30pm NT
Sponsored by the CSA Student Concerns Subcommittee.
Dr. Alison Taylor will discuss her recent publication Juggling rhythms: Working-student life in the 21st century, Brill 2025 with expert panelists.
In contrast to predominant discourses about the 21st century skills required by students, Taylor’s recent book frames the tactics of working undergraduates as “circus arts.” She examines how students learn to manipulate multiple activities (juggling), adjust and recalibrate activities and plans (high-wire walking), learn the limits of flexibility (contortion), and respond to unhealthy expectations and practices (sword swallowing). In so doing, Taylor opens space for discussions that acknowledge the complexity and precarity of diverse student transitions between learning and work.
